John Is On The Web!! John is tickled to death to announce that he is now on the Internet. Johns web site contains a complete discography of albums and CDs, a current itinerary, and information on his hobbies, steamboat and old-time fiddle history. The web site has also provided an opportunity for Johns fans to get in touch with him through e-mail. Here are a couple of comments that we have received: Stumbling across this site is the highlight of over a year of internet sleuthing. - William H. Smith - whsmith1@ix.netcom.com Just checked out your Web page and it sure looks good. They did a great job! - Carl Yaffey - cyaffey@sprynet.com We will continuously update the page, so be sure to check it frequently. A Bluegrass Tribute to Courtney Johnson John recently performed at the Ryman to help raise money for the family of Courtney Johnson. Johnson, the original banjo player for New Grass Revival, died on June 7, 1996 after being diagnosed with lung cancer only a few months earlier. Keith Case and Associates, in cooperation with the Ryman, organized the benefit that took place on September 24th. The concert featured a reunion of New Grass Revival and an all-star jam session to close the show. John performed a moving version of "Cross-Eyed Child" as a tribute to Bill Monroe, reminding the audience of another recent tragedy in the bluegrass community. For photographs and more information about the concert, look it up on the web at: http://www.techpublishing.com/johnson/ |
John has two new CD's out. No End of Love features an all new band and several new river songs and Wild Hog in the Red Brush is full of old fiddle tunes once played by Ed Haley. John has brought together several excellent musicians to back him on No End of Love, his latest release on Small Dog-A-Barkin Records. Mike Compton plays mandolin, Ronnie McCoury is on guitar and vocals. Roy Husky Jr. plays bass and Jamie Hartford provides harmony vocals. These artists combine to provide a full sound to Johns lyrics and banjo and fiddle playing. Several new songs are a look back at history. When the Guiding Star Came to Tell City and The Burning of the Grand Republic are stories of legendary steamboats brought back to life through Johns lyrics. Two previously recorded songs are also featured on this CD. No End of Love and Gentle on My Mind were originally released in 1967 on Earthwords and Music. Wild Hog In The Red Brush, Johns latest release on Rounder Records, is a collection of old-time fiddle tunes. John had originally wanted to do an album of tunes that he had heard Blind Ed Haley play on his homemade recordings. But he has found titles of tunes that were played in the Ohio River Valley region at the time Ed Haley was playing, that John is reasonably sure Ed might have played. John has resurrected these old tunes for a whole new generation to enjoy. On the album, John plays fiddle with Bob Carlin on banjo, Mike Compton on mandolin, Ronnie McCoury on guitar and Jerry McCoury on bass.
