City of St. Louis

The City of St. Louis was a side-wheel wood hull packet built in Jeffersonville, Ind. by Howard, in 1883. She measured 300 x 49 x 8.6. Owned by Anchor Line. Capt. James O'Neal was master, and in 1894 his pilots were Joe Bryan and Charlie O'Neal. Capt. W.H. Thorgewan bought her at a U.S. marshal sale at St. Louis, March 1898, for his bid of $19,050. He went master, with C.M. Berkley, clerk. Columbia Excursion Co. had her briefly, and sold her July 1899 to James M. Grasty. She was running harbor excursions at New Orleans 1901, and President McKinley rode her that May. Grasty sold her early in 1903 to the Greater New York Home OIl Co. but a U.S. marshal stepped in and sold her to attorney T. Marshall Miller for $3,125. She was laid up at Carondelet, Mo., and burned there October 29, 1903. The Anchor Line sold her original roof bell to Capt. J. Frank Ellison and it went to the Queen City.
