Welcome!

December 20, 1996

Happy Holidays from all of us to all of you. As you can see, I have placed John and Marie's Christmas card on the page for all to see. I was honored that they asked me to take the picture, and we had a lot of fun putting it together.

I have added a little biographical information about John that I hope everyone finds interesting. It is not a complete account of all of his accomplishments, by any means, but it is a start. I plan to expand it in the future.

John's Itinerary has been updated to show the dates currently scheduled for the new year. Be sure to see when he is coming close to you.

We have some other exciting news and things to come, but I am going to have to save that until January. The Christmas rush just hasn't left me with enough time to get everything ready.

I hope you are happy with the updates, and continue enjoying the page.

Have a safe and happy holiday season. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

John and I are happy to announce that his latest release on Rounder Records, Wild Hog In The Red Brush has been nominated for a Nammie (Nashville Music Awards.) The album is nominated for best bluegrass/old time recording. If you live in the Nashville area, you can vote for John by sending in a ballot from the Nashville Scene.

We have added a catalog of merchandise that you can order from John Hartford Music. Be sure to check the available items and complete your John Hartford collection.

Two of John's Videos were added to the discography page.

The newsletter page was updated to reflect the content as it was mailed.

Several things were added to the Old-Time Fiddling page. Excerpts from John's book in progress about Ed Haley will give you a hint at what is to come. John's handwritten transcription of Ed Haley's version of Bonaparte's Retreat is provided for all of you fiddle players. An article from a 1947 Life Magazine about Thomas Jefferson chronicles one of the more "powerful" old-time fiddlers.

We have added four steamboats and their histories to the Steamboat history page.

We've placed some reviews on here from the Chicago Tribune and from some fans, as well as a few album reviews on the web.

There are now links to Rounder Records and Deering Banjoes on the Links page.

There are some photos of John's recent performance at the Station Inn in the Photo Gallery.

To answer the most popular question that we have received: Aereo-plain WILL be released on CD by Rounder Records. The release date is still uncertain, but it should be out early next year.

The first note from John to his fans on the Internet is now online. We are going to try to update his comments frequently to keep you abreast of the goings-on in his life.

We now have John's Album discography, complete with the front and back covers and the full liner notes. If you are relatively new to John Hartford, be sure to read the biography in the liner notes of the Anthology for a little of his history.

There is a new addition to the CD Discography. Rounder Records just released Wild Hog In The Red Brush a collection of old time fiddle tunes. The full liner notes are included with stories about each of the songs.

We have updated John's itinerary, adding his upcoming date at the Station Inn in Nashville on November 2nd, and displaying a picture of John performing at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN last month.

We have also added all new photos to the Photo Gallery from his most recent performances.

You can now download John's latest newsletter if you want to see it with pictures. If you would just like to read it, the text is included on the newsletter page.

We have added a little historical information about the steamboats featured on the Steamboat History page.

We will be starting an e-mail newsletter to keep you abreast of the latest news regarding John's performance schedule. If you are interested, e-mail us and let us know.

Tuesday night, September 24th, John performed with an all-star line-up at the Ryman Auditorium. The concert was a benefit for a good friend, Courtney Johnson. Johnson was the original banjo player for the New Grass Revival. He died of cancer this summer. The benefit raised money for his family.

We have a complete page dedicated to the memory of Courtney Johnson, featuring pictures of each group that performed on Tuesday night with the songs that they played.

We hope you enjoy the web page. Feel free to e-mail us with questions for John or comments about the page. If you have any trouble viewing any part of the site, please let us know.

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to write John and I with questions and comments about the page. We appreciate each and every comment, and try to respond to every message within a day.

Sincerely,
David Schenk
