i first heard john hartford's music when a fellow co-worker brought in the aereoplane album and asked if i could tape it for him since he didn't have a phonograph. i was hooked instantly. his music was such a sigh of relief. it screamed of old-time and modern at the same time. he injected a much needed burst of originality to bluegrass as well as preserving as much of the past that he could. i am fortunate to have seen him at the canyon country bluegrass festival in 2000. he played fiddle and banjo and played well. i,like most people i know didn't relize how fortunate we were to see him. as well we didn't relize how sick he really was. june 4th will forever be a gloomy day for me. and i hope whoever upstairs took him away needed him more than we did.
goodbye mr. hartford
p.s. if you run into howard hughes ask him if he still has his blues.
