I imagine that the first time I saw/heard John was on 'The Smothers Brothers Show," but later on I ran into him a few times at gatherings in the early 70s Always open to conversation and willing to pick and play. He captivated everyone with his resonant voice and, certainly, these were resonant times. Twenty five years passed and there he was, performing at Freight and Salvage on San Pablo in Berkeley -- all of us older and grayer, some of us having to work in tall buildings, but not John, thank God. What an excellent spirit, a true scholar of his craft, and of his region. A fine wit and a fine man. I will miss him, but, bless his heart, we still have his music.
