I think John had a real talent for connecting with his audience. I also had this experience when I went to see him at the Guthrie theatre years ago. I was disturbed by being with my sister. She turned to me as he started his first number and said, " You sure know who to have a crush on" which would normally have started an argument because I never said I had a crush on him. I don't know if he heard what she said from 10 rows back, or if he just picked up on the shocked expression on my face, but he looked straight at me until I looked more calmed down.
