I think I heard what you did, too. I beleive it was on the "Stashed Behind Your Couch" retrospective, and John was talking about his early days as a session musician when the banjo was not a popular serious instrument.

I think he was referring to "drop-D", where you tune the highest string on the guitar, normally an E down to D so that the first four strings (starting at the bottom) are identical to the first four strings on a banjo. I don't know if he did this for all his guitar songs, though.
